The middle and low reaches of the Yangtze River areas is one of the cradles of jade culture. During the period of the Liang Zhu culture, jade-making techniques are greatly improved, with various varieties and functions. Liang Zhu jade articles are not only famous for their symmetry and plentiful varieties, but are also products of exquisite techniques. Liang Zhu jade cong (octagonal jade badge) are believed to be the symbol of divine power.
This cong runs a diameter of 12.5 centimeters, which is relatively big among similar jade cong. This article is divided into two parts, the upper and the lower parts. On the four horns are inscribed four groups of images of god-men and monster faces typical of the Liang Zhu culture. On the upper part is inscribed the god-man face while the lower part is the monster face. As for the uneven surface of the cong, it is related to the material itself. The whole article is elegantly made and carefully polished.
