Long long ago, there lived in the water-bound country in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Delta a group of primitive men. Having their hairs cut and tattooing their bodies, these ancient people made paddy rice and fish as food. When the Central Plains entered into the glorious stage of ancient empire, this land, which first bathed the dawn of human civilization, was still in the desolated state. Although in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.) and the Waring States Period (475-221 B.C.) some kingdoms in this area once were in the list of the “Five Overlords ”, but generally speaking, this land did not experience conspicuous development until the establishment of the Wu Kingdom (220-265) in the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280) and people of the North immigrated to the south of the Yangtze River Delta during the Jin Dynasty (265-420). The influence of the Central Plains to this land was imperceptible but effective, urbane and affable atmosphere gradually replaced the general mood of intrepidity and valiancy. The dredging of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal further brought vitality to the social development of this land. After the middle of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), this land began to show broader foreground than the Central Plains. In the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), it became center of China. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), this land was not only Chinese the most economically and culturally prosperous area, as well as the land luring the most talents, but also became the front-line of Chinese social changes in the modern times in early 1900s.
